The following activity can help children read, speak and consequently write more creatively. Through kinesthetically engaging with the text, they can find pace, movement and meaning in the words. It also helps them control their breathing to speak with greater ease and thus more confidently.
Aim To encourage children to find the pace of text when reading.
Time Variable
Number in group Individual
Resources required Copy of text for each child.
Directions Ask children to read the text in their heads 2 or 3 times. Now, ask them tor read it out aloud. Each time they see a bit of punctuation, they are to pause
and move to another space in the room- ask them to think about the mood of the text e.g. if they move around a lot, is that building excitement? Let the children have a couple of goes at this. Now ask them to try reading the text on the spot, but this time being aware of their previous movement and energy to read the text with the same enthusiasm. Extension You can develop the activity to explore the qualities of punctuation e.g. on a coma the children might take small steps. On an exclamation they may jump into a differentspace.
