Exploring stories and structure with children

09 Aug 2008

We use this exercise to explore structure with primary children, it typifies our philosopy to let children be creative first and learn from their own ideas, experiences and creativity.

Aim                               To allow children to creatively explore stories and the construction of stories

Resources                    None

Time                             15min+

Space                           Enough space for groups to act out story

Number in a group      Variable

Directions                    Introduce the genre of the story you wish to explore e.g. fairytales. Split group into smaller groups. Give each group a fairytale in secret. Ask them to find a way to perform the story in gibberish, whilst making it clear enough for the rest of the group to be able to guess what the story is. Give each group time to rehearse their story and then bring the whole class together to perform. Following the performance discuss the groups observations, then begin to breakdown the structure of all of the stories - this can be furthered by looking at  particular characters/comparing and contrasting stories or looking more specifically at familiar settings.

Louise was superb with children especially one who had sp. needs. He was encouraged at all times to be an active member of the group and was seen to do things that he would normally choose to avoid. Thanks to Louise for her enthusiasm!
