Games: Stop/Go
Our Favourite Games to Build Group Dynamics
When you're working with a new group, or even just reconnecting with one you know, one of our go-to favourites is Stop / Go. It’s fast-paced, adaptable, and full of potential for reading the room.

How to Play:
Start by asking everyone to find their own space in the room. Depending on the mood or needs of the group, you might invite them to close their eyes, take a few deep breaths, and settle into the space quietly. This helps create a moment of focus before the energy ramps up.

Then, ask them to begin moving around the room as fast as they can, without running or bumping into anyone or anything. When you call out “Stop!”, everyone must freeze instantly, with the control and awareness of an athlete. When you say “Go!”, they start moving again.
Once the group is comfortable with the rhythm, flip the rules:
-
“Go” means stop
-
“Stop” means go
You can build on the game by adding new pairs of actions or weaving in themed movements. For example, if you're exploring space, you might add “moonwalk” and “space landing” to the mix.

Why We Love It:
It’s easy to set up, and it reveals so much about your group straight away. You’ll quickly see who’s tuned in and responsive, who might need more time or support, and where the group's energy is sitting. If people are struggling to stop or aren’t listening to the cues, you can adjust your next activity to meet them where they are. On the other hand, if they’re breezing through it or seem bored, you can ramp up the complexity or move into a more collaborative challenge.

Stop / Go isn’t just a warm-up - it’s a way to build trust, sharpen focus, and start tuning into one another. And it’s fun!
