Games: A/B Trust

Our Favourite Game to Bond a Group

We’re not quite sure where this game came from, maybe we read about it, maybe we played it in a workshop - but what we do know is this: every time someone opens their eyes, something magical happens.

How to Play

Start by splitting everyone into pairs. One person is A, the other B.

A gently takes B by the hand, or any contact point B is comfortable with, and leads them around the room while B keeps their eyes closed.

Here’s the key: B is in control. The moment they don’t feel safe, they can stop or sit down. A’s job is to earn their trust. The more trust there is, the bolder the movement can become. Eventually, it should feel like a dance.

Encourage silence. Let the connection between the pair do the talking.

Then, swap roles. Let B lead.

After each round, take time to reflect:

  • What felt good?

  • What didn’t?

  • When did you feel most connected?

Round Two

Play again, with a twist. This time, A can let go of B for short moments, allowing them to walk solo (eyes still closed). A must stay close and responsible for their partner’s safety, reconnecting with different points of contact along the way.

Silence is especially important here. What’s the difference when B isn’t prepared to walk alone, versus when they are? How does silence shift their perception, compared to subtle cues like breath or the sound of footsteps?

Ask: What does this teach us about good theatre?

Swap roles. Reflect again.

Round Three

Now, let it evolve into a group experience. All the As can now swap partners, leading different Bs around the room. Each A is now responsible for keeping everyone safe. No talking. At the end, ask Bs to guess who was leading them - this adds a layer of anticipation and intrigue.

Then, swap and reflect once more.

Why We Love It

When the environment is right, this game becomes a powerful exercise in trust, awareness, and nonverbal communication. It naturally deepens group connection and lays the foundation for how they’ll collaborate and support each other moving forward. It’s simple, quiet, and surprisingly profound.
